Some lucky people seem to have a rare talent for choosing the most wonderful and meaningful gifts. We all have a parent, grandparent, aunt, or friend who always seems to hit the mark with thoughtful, creative, or unusual presents.
But for most of us, choosing the right present for a special occasion can be a daunting experience. Perhaps we’ve run out of ideas, or we’re not really sure what our loved ones want. One thing is certain, though. You can’t beat that warm feeling you get when you see the look of pleasure on their face when they unwrap a present that’s just right for them.
To help you choose a truly special gift for those closest to you, we’ve come up with a few suggestions, together with some advice that will help you to make the right choice.
Different special occasions demand different focus. Red roses, chocolates, and champagne might be well-received on Valentine’s Day, but for a birthday or Christmas, your loved one might be hoping for something a little more imaginative and thoughtful. In a similar vein, a humorous present might be just the thing for a Mother’s/Father’s day gift, whereas a wedding anniversary may require you to follow a specific theme. Did you know that you are supposed to give something wooden for a fifth wedding anniversary, and something made from tin for the tenth?!
Significant wedding anniversaries aside, it’s always a good idea to take some time out to think about what you’re going to give and what’s appropriate. A warm winter pullover might be welcome at Christmas, but less so for a summer birthday!
It’s also a fact that the most expensive gifts aren’t necessarily the best presents. A meaningful gift that’s been chosen with thought and care will always be better received than a costly but inappropriate present.
Sometimes the best gifts are a surprise, but it can also be worthwhile actually asking people what they want. If you don’t want to ask directly, then ask family or friends what they think the person would like to receive. As an example, my teenage twin daughters have their finger on the pulse and know exactly what their Mom would like for her birthday. And unlike me, they even know the correct color and size too!

When you’re thinking about what to buy for someone, consideration of their hobbies and interests is always an excellent starting point. Not only does such a present show that you’ve thought about the person and the gift, but it’s also more likely to be well-received.
The choice of an appropriate romantic gift can be a minefield, especially for men, and yet with a little care and attention, it’s not too difficult to come up trumps every time. The secret is to do your research and planning, to ask a few pertinent questions, and also to give some thought as to how you present the gift. What better way to show someone how much you love them?
Take a little time to do your homework, and you can avoid most of the hassles that come with choosing a gift for a loved one. In fact, the choice of a present can actually become an enjoyable experience!
